History
In 1896 two sisters of Mercy arrived in Fort Scott on their way to California from Michigan. The local priest convinced them of the need for a school and they decided to cancel their trip to California and instead return Michigan to get permission to open a school in Fort Scott. Before they returned, the community determined that a hospital was a greater need and when the sisters returned there was a 10 bed hospital ready for them to run.
After a few years the needs were outgrowing the available space and a larger four story structure was built on Tower Hill on Burke street. This location was expanded in 1929. In 1956 a new building was built on Burke street to house the hospital. In 2002 a new building was built on the South end of Fort Scott and the Burke street location was demolished.
